Influences

A peaceful mindset and a deep inner curiosity have shaped who I am, strongly influenced by my family. My mother’s care and love created a happy and nurturing environment, while my father’s constant encouragement motivated me to become a well-rounded individual and strive for meaningful achievement. As the youngest child, I received special attention from my mother, and my father’s consistent guidance and advice laid a strong foundation during my childhood.

My passion for learning and science emerged at an early age. One of the most important influences was my uncle, a Catholic priest, who, recognizing my growing interest in science, introduced me to a wide range of biographies of scientists. One book in particular—about Leonardo da Vinci—left a lasting impression on me, as I saw my own curiosity reflected in his way of thinking.

At school, my interest in science stood out, and classmates often referred to me as a “scientist.” My alma mater, St. Benedict’s College, Colombo 13, is run by the La Sallian Reverend Brothers and is known for its strong emphasis on discipline, order, and values. Within this structured environment, I experienced a warm and supportive school life. My classmates were loving and caring, and we were given the freedom and time to talk, collaborate, and play—an important balance that nurtured both character and creativity.

One of the milestones in my school life was being selected as a prefect prior to my Advanced Level studies, a responsibility entrusted to only a few students. This role not only introduced me to the fundamentals of leadership but also helped me develop essential organizational and interpersonal skills at an early stage. Alongside this responsibility, I was actively involved in the Western Band, where I honed my musical abilities and was honored with a Colors Award in recognition of my dedication and contribution. Participation in school-level competitions in general knowledge and singing further provided a valuable playground for building confidence, discipline, and creativity.

Although I achieved average results in some subjects, I consistently excelled in science. The encouragement of my teachers and the supportive school environment allowed me to explore, strengthen, and nurture my inner passion for learning.

After marriage, my wife became a tremendous source of support and inspiration. Despite being a professional medical doctor, she selflessly balanced her responsibilities as a parent and partner, taking on a dual role with dedication and strength. She managed her profession while remaining deeply involved in our children’s education and daily care, enabling me to continue pursuing my passion without interruption. Recognizing the sacrifices she made, I became more conscious of the need to balance my ambitions with my responsibility toward my family, and I continue to adjust myself to give more time and attention to my children’s well-being and future.

Beyond my family, I have been fortunate to be guided by a few highly influential individuals whose passion and determination continue to inspire me. Their journeys motivate me to stay focused, energized, and committed to growth every day. In this page I will blend my life and the impacts. You will see my life and some stories in between while these genius made imapct on me.

I hang photos of four people in my room: two musicians, one martial artist, one scientist and polymath. For now, I will focus on the three artists and what I learn from them.

  1. Ilaiyaraaja

If I had not listened to Ilaiyaraaja’s music, I might never have decided to become a composer (Am I a composer, or have I started my composing journey? check my link). Listening to thousands of songs and experiencing the deep layers of his compositions—the emotional depth, creative brilliance, and profound musical involvement—became a powerful source of inspiration for me. His music made me realize that music is not just something to be heard; it is something to be felt deeply, almost as if it becomes part of one’s very being.

Through his compositions, I understood the true power of music and how emotion gives it life. Without strong compositions, the depth and impact of music cannot be fully realized. This awareness led me to an important realization: I did not want to remain only a consumer of music—I wanted to be a creator. My inspiration to produce and compose music was born entirely from the joy of listening to Ilaiyaraaja’s songs.

I am a curious science student who always dives deep to understand the fundamentals. While studying high school Physics—referred to as the Advanced Level (A/L) in Sri Lanka—I was an A/L 2000 batch student at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10. Doesn’t that year itself feel like a attractive number? There was a story world is going to end in year 2000 🙂 . During this period, there was a particular incident while learning the chapter on waves and oscillations that worth to share for students. I made a conscious effort to interpret each concept thoroughly in order to grasp the underlying principles of vibration, oscillations in strings and air, and the foundations of frequency, amplitude, and resonance.

I would also like to highlight my parents’ perspective during this time. They understood that this deep level of involvement might sometimes affect my grades. However, both my father and mother chose to give me the freedom to experiment and explore my curiosity. Their guidance emphasized learning and understanding rather than focusing solely on marks or academic performance.

This approach to learning paid off when I began pursuing my New Year’s resolutions. The investments I made in my childhood and high school education became powerful tools that now allow me to move forward with confidence and strong foundations in my music career.

On March 8, 2025, at the age of 81, Ilaiyaraaja presented his first Western classical symphony, Valiant, at London’s Eventim Apollo Theatre with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, becoming a historic milestone in Asian music history. This achievement shows not just artistic brilliance but also extraordinary endurance and vitality—an example of how music can keep a person active and make them a valuable contributor to the world.

While you can read about his achievements through other sources, it is more than awards and titles that make him inspiring. It is his approach, his deep involvement, and his relentless pursuit of mastery that have profoundly influenced me, and I follow him as a guiding inspiration in my life.

Who could be next to come to this level?
