I’ve always been drawn to Hindi songs, particularly their smooth word transitions. My first significant interaction with Hindi was during my undergraduate years at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. I performed a Hindi song there, and that experience left a lasting impression. Later, I combined a Hindi song with my favorite Tamil songs at a company event and won first place. Despite my limited knowledge of Hindi beyond the song lyrics, I’ve always wondered if restarting Hindi learning alongside music would be a fruitful approach.

My Strategy
Language learning is a complex skill. I am learning Hindi, but my goal is not to write Hindi books. My goal is to learn spoken Hindi.
If I meet a native Hindi speaker, I should be able to have a comfortable conversation. When I reach that level, and when my vocabulary grows to around 2,000 words or more, I will consider my goal achieved.
In summary, my learning goal is to become fluent in spoken Hindi.
Defining a clear goal is the most important step in developing any skill.
I want to apply an Agile methodology, specifically a Scrum-style epic user story, to define my language-learning goal.
Epic: Learn Hindi
As a polyglot learner, I want to be able to speak with a native Hindi speaker comfortably, so that the speaker clearly understands me, and I can maintain a continuous conversation without long pauses. I will also demonstrate evidence that I know at least 2,000 Hindi words. Once these criteria are met, I will consider my Hindi learning goal achieved.
Step 1:
Learn a batch of vocabulary.
Step 2:
Apply that vocabulary in context. To do this, you need to learn the rules of the language, which we call grammar.
Step 3:
Until I reach 2000 words. Repeat Step 1.
