My brother received a guitar as a gift from our uncle, who is a priest. He used to play it often, and occasionally I began to strum the strings out of curiosity. Looking back, I realize that learning was initiated by my surroundings and by someone’s good intention—a thoughtful gift that quietly changed my life.

I began playing simple melodies purely for my own enjoyment, especially during a difficult period in my life. At that time, Sri Lanka was experiencing a severe dry season. The country depended heavily on hydroelectric power, and due to low rainfall, there were frequent power cuts that lasted for months. These long hours without electricity allowed me to spend more time with the guitar. I practiced the alphabet chords, beginner-level songs, and a few basic chords using a book that was also gifted by our uncle, Rev. Fr Stalin Rajendram.

This was a time when the internet was not accessible to everyone. There was no YouTube, no streaming platforms, and no online tutorials. Learning depended entirely on patience, repetition, and self-motivation.

Am I a professional guitarist? No. I am still a beginner-level guitarist. However, I feel genuine happiness when I pick up a guitar and play a song. It gives me great enjoyment and adds real value to my life. To me, this skill is like a piece of jewelry—something I wear internally. It is a skill I carry within myself.
